Gel-Filled Implants Risks

gel_filled_implantsIf in a gel-filled implant occurs a break, it can lead to one of two following consequences:

1) If only the shell breaks and the scar capsule around the implant does not, you may not find any change;
2) If the scar breaks or the laceration occurs, particularly with the high pressure, a silicone gel can soak into surrounding tissue.

The gel that is collected in the breast can cause a new scar around it, or can move to another area of the body. It may cause a change in the shape or immovability of the breast. Each type of breaks requires a second operation and substitution of the leaking implant. There are some cases, in which is not possible to remove all of the silicone gel in the breast tissue if a rupture should occur.

silicone_implantsThere were some cases that a few women after the surgery of breast augmentation have told about symptoms alike to diseases of the immune system, such as scleroderma and other arthritis-like conditions. The main symptoms are: joint pain or tumor, fever, exhaustion, and breast pain. Research has showed that there are no straight link between silicone breast implants and the symptoms that doctors consider to as "connective-tissue disorders". The FDA has requested the further study of these disorders.

Now there are no obvious evidences that breast implants can cause breast cancer. They may change the way mammography is done to detect cancer. If you need to do a mammogram, you must go to a radiology center where there are specialists that are experienced in the special techniques required to get a trustworthy x-ray of a breast with an implant. Maybe the additional views will be required. Ultrasound examinations may be useful for some women with implants just to find breast lumps or to determine the implant.

The most of women have no experience with such complications. If you want to avoid them you must discuss each of them with your physician to become sure that you have understood the risks and consequences of breast augmentation.
