Breast Implants Myths

 9. Breast implants make it difficult to detect breast cancer with mammography.
Well, yes, this is true to some extent. Therefore, this is why doctors take more films and more angles when a woman with breast implants has her annual mammogram. In addition, doctors will manipulate breasts, equipped with breast implant in somewhat different way to make sure they have images from all of them.
It is also necessary to point out, that every woman is to have a baseline mammogram, especially those, belonging to risk groups: women over 35 years old and women with a history of breast cancer in the family.

10. Silicone – filled breast implants cause breast cancer.
There is no reason to get worried, because numerous investigations, conducted in this area of knowledge, proved that no silicone – filled breast implant increases a woman’s risk of having breast or any other type of cancer. During some researches cancer cells were even purposely seeded into the breast tissue of laboratory rats with implant, still, even then there were no additional rates of cancer seen.

As for human beings, there is more positive to say: the Institute of Medicine together with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) found that breast cancer was no more common in women with implants, comparing to those, who did not have breast implants. Therefore, the NCI did not found either that there was the least increase in risk of cancer of the lung and larynx and of the brain in women who had breast implants, when compared to women, who underwent any kind of cosmetic surgery, which did not involve silicone implants. Therefore, it is also extremely necessary to point out, that the significance of either of these findings is not clear, because other factors, such as smoking, etc. were not taken into consideration.

11. The recovery after breast augmentation surgery involves just the same amount of pain, if someone needs to have the implant replaced because of rupture.
This is not true, because during the initial surgery there is a breast implant pocket created, thus, the initial expansion of the skin and its tissues is required, which is the reason of feelings of pain and discomfort in a breast augmentation surgery. All that is necessary to be conducted during the breast implant replacement procedure is to open the already existing pocket and simply have the implant changed, which lessens the feeling of discomfort and pain sufficiently. Therefore, it should also be pointed out, that the area around the sutures can possibly cause some discomfort, though it usually minimal.

12. The patient either gets denied or dropped from the health insurance, incase if breast augmentation procedure is conducted.
As a rule health insurance does not cover any of the costs of breast augmentation surgery, in case if it is conducted for purely cosmetic reason. It will usually pay for the breasts reconstruction after a reconstructive breast augmentation or enhancement, called mastectomy. Therefore, every single case if individual, this is why it is necessary to call the person’s insurance company in order to determine how having breast implants may influence his or her health insurance. It should also be mentioned, that in some cases for women, who had this kind of surgery, companies increase premiums, drop coverage, or deny future coverage following breast implant surgery or following complications from the breast implant or from the surgery, etc.
However, even when someone’s insurer would not change the premiums or drop the person, it may not cover the costs of any possible complications because of the cosmetic breast augmentation. It is important to contact the insurance company and get to know about their policy as for the coverage of complications stemming from cosmetic surgeries.
It is also necessary to determine what coverage will be for the patient’s any and all follow – up tests that he or she may require after breast augmentation procedure. Most implant makers consider that Magnetic Resonance Imaging is necessary to be conducted every few years after having silicone – filled implants, and the insurance company may not cover this imaging.
